Devlog for my longterm game, Residuum! Inspired by Fran Bow and Sally Face
Residuum: A Dark Puzzler RPG taking place in a post-rapture world, where the partially missing human population has been taken over by Other species. Our main character is Weka, a young girl who lives alone in a dumpster, reworked into a cozy room!
Due to political and religious strife rising to a fever pitch, Weka needs to escape her falling-apart city when a bomb goes off.
She’s lived only in a human district and has met only 1 other species, an alien race (aptly named Eilyens lol), looking quite like the cliche green aliens we know of. They are the only species that appear in color!
A large portion of the game deals with the church, heavily occult and attempting to brute-force their way into heaven. There are both optional and mandatory puzzles - some giving rewards, some giving story progression. Some puzzles are classic like finding a code to open boxes, figuring out how a machine works by fidgeting with its buttons and valves, lighting candles in the right order, shining the right-colored sunlight onto plants to make them grow correctly, etc!
The story is not very realistic at all, especially in the non-human districts, where the species are reliant on magic. Weka will gain 3 companions which can be swapped to party leader to use their specific skills to solve puzzles.
- Sequit is a mute demonic ghost and her first follower. He can levitate and use dark magic
- Novis is an Eilyen, around 15 years old. She is a technomaniac and can construct gadgets far beyond what would be considered possible with such little materials. She specializes in weaponry and is quite sarcastic and full of herself
- Narcan is an Eilyen, around 17. He’s the ringleader of a crime ring in one of the larger cities- but is genuinely a good guy. Think of his gang sorta like Team Skull (pokemon) level of evil. Making him the party lead will enable puzzles requiring brute force or coercion to be solved
The areas of the game are the Human city districts, Church(es?), Forest areas (inhabited by magical animals and demonic creatures), a floating fishing city (Eilyen-dominated), a smaller desert-like area which has more horror-looking creatures, a high-tech Eilyen city, and other areas that havent been fully designed yet!
The story is that after Weka escapes, she simply needs to find somewhere else to go, as her hometown is compromised. She and her newly-found friends end up discovering that there’s a much more pressing problem, as the reigning Eilyen government is attempting to eliminate humans altogether. Or rather, just their leader is. It’s quite complicated and is a little patchy in spots, but thats the main conflict! This small group of kids has a lot in their hands and just wants everything to be okay. As not all of these species are familiar with each other, it can be just as terrifying for them to come into contact with each other. There is an element of horror, but its not the main theme. There will be both lighthearted moments as well as somber!
There will be minor antagonists along the way, along with 1 overarching main antagonist with a god complex.
Game is being developed in Unity and has been in the works on and off for a couple years now! Finally locking in and putting it from sketchbook to screen! Currently being developed just by me, but I just recently got a composer to help out, since I dont make music myself : )
The free demo should be out sometime next year and will be available on steam (and itch if the filesize allows lol
